Are users leaving Elon Musk's X in droves and which platform are they joining?

Hundreds of thousands of disgruntled users have reportedly left Elon Musk's X following Donald Trump's re-election as US president, with around 115,000 accounts deactivated in US states alone the day after the vote. Celebrities and well-known brands abandoning the platform cite growing concerns about the unchecked spread of misinformation, conspiracy theories and hate speech, as well as what they consider to be Musk's role in the Trump administration.

"X is a toxic media platform and its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse," The Guardian said in a statement announcing the platform's departure. But determining the exact number of users who leave X is challenging, as the platform does not regularly release global user data.

How many people are in X and how many are leaving?

Estimates of X's global monthly user base vary widely.

But estimates used by research agencies and popular business media - put the number of users at 611 million in April this year, with a 6% drop to 588 million by September.

While many experts dispute these figures, there has been a downward trend in the number of users on the platform since Musk took over in 2022.

It is understood that X is legally obliged to disclose its EU user numbers under the requirements of the bloc's digital regulation, the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Reports show that the average number of EU monthly users fell from 111.4 million to 106 million.
